Two RPS wrestlers qualify for IESA state tournament

DEKALB – Wrestlers from Flinn and Lincoln middle schools will have shots at IESA state championships.

Qasem Ali, an eighth-grader at Lincoln, won the IESA Class AA DeKalb Sectional at 119 pounds, beating Salvadore Esquivel of Harvard Junior High.

Mason Crowe, a Flinn eighth-grader, also advanced to state by taking second in the 155-pound division. Crowe lost the title match to Ayden Salley of Barrington Station.

The IESA state tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and adults and parking is $5.00.

Last year, Joey Pineda won the first IESA wrestling championship in RPS 205 history when he claimed the 215-pound title for Flinn. Pineda wrestled for East this year, compiling a solid 27-16 at 195 pounds and advancing to an IHSA sectional.
