RVC’s first scholarship offer goes to Guilford star

ROCKFORD – Rock Valley College has built its sports programs up to dominate softball and consistently make it to the national finals in JUCO Division III in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and soccer.

The Golden Eagles are ready for a step up in competition. RVC will move to NJCAA Division II beginning in 2021-2022. What that means is the school can offer tuition scholarships for players interested in becoming a Golden Eagle.

RVC women’s basketball coach Darryl Watkins got his first scholarship commitment last week and it was from Kiara Brandon, a guard from Guilford.

Brandon averaged 7.5 points per game and 2.7 rebounds for the Vikings. She’s particularly adept at shooting the three-pointer. That’s what attracted Watkins.

“She shoots at a high clip,” Watkins said. “That’s something that we’re missing on our team right now.”
