RPS 205 schools look good heading into summer tournaments

ROCKFORD – The month of June for high school basketball has turned into a season by itself.

The Jefferson J-Hawks went 2-0 Monday night to finish the three-week East High School Varsity Summer League at 4-2. East splits its games Monday, beating Byron 78-41 but falling to Hononegah, 60-59, to also finish 4-2.

Auburn finished at 5-1. The Knights were perfect the first two weeks, but they fell to Harlem, 56-50, before beating Dixon, 57-47.

The East summer league wraps up next Monday and Tuesday with a championship tournament.

All three RPS schools are in the same half of the tournament and play first round games at 8 p.m. next Monday. Jefferson faces South Beloit on court three of the field house. East plays Janesville Parker in the main gym, and Auburn takes on Byron on field house court one.

East and Jefferson could face each other in the second round. Auburn wouldn’t face either until the semifinals.

Of course, there’s a new wrinkle this year. Beginning Friday, East, Auburn, Guilford and Jefferson will play four games over three days in the inaugural Chicagoland Summer Showcase.

Those four schools will play another four games over June 28-30. So in a 12-day stretch, Guilford will play eight games, while East, Auburn and Jefferson could play as many as 13.

That’s a summer vacation.
