Jefferson wins gold division title in first summer showcase

Jefferson celebrates after beating Omaha Benson of Nebraska on Sunday at Rock Valley College.

ROCKFORD – Quay Robinson hit a driving, left-handed runner in the final seconds to lift the Jefferson J-Hawks over Omaha (Nebraska) Benson, 66-64, to win the gold division of the large school bracket Sunday at the Chicagoland Summer Showcase I.

Both of the final games Sunday at Rock Valley College came down to the buzzer in the tournament that featured 40 high school teams from eight states.

While Jefferson was knocking off Benson behind 20 points from Antonio Leavy and 16 from George Williams, Ohio state champion Moeller was holding off Bellevue West of Nebraska, 52-51, to win the overall championship for large schools.

Moeller, which has won the past two Ohio state titles, was 6-0 over the three-day tournament, beating Belleville Althoff Catholic, Bloomington and Auburn of Illinois, Ferndale of Michigan and Omaha Benson and Bellevue West of Nebraska.

Sheboygan Lutheran, the defending Division 5 champion of Wisconsin, went 5-0 to win the small school division.
