Armato was an assistant at Guilford at the beginning of this past season. He took over as interim coach on Jan. 31. The Vikings finished 18-14 for the season, the first winning season for Guilford since the 2006-2007 season. The Vikings went 5-3 with Armato running the team.

Armato is a known commodity in the Rockford basketball community with a long track record of success. He’s a member of the Rock Valley College Hall of Fame after guiding the junior college program to a 216-143 record over 12 seasons.

Armato is a 1984 Northern Illinois University graduate who was the starting point guard on the first Huskies team to make the NCAA tournament (1981-1982).

After NIU, he served as Winnebago head coach from 1985-1987 where he was 31-18 and DeKalb from 1987-1989 where his team won a regional title. After his stint at RVC, he served as an assistant coach at NIU, as Rockford Public Schools athletic director and as a roving basketball instructor and coaching developer at times for the district.

Hopes are high for the 2019-2020 Vikings. Six of the team’s top nine scorers, including the top two, will be returning.
