Defense making East football contender

The East E-Rabs improved to 2-1 Friday night with a 26-8 win over Auburn at Swanson Stadium.

The E-Rabs have shown more versatility this year on offense and features perhaps the conference’s top running back in Javius Caitlyn, but it’s been the defense that’s carried East so far.

The E-Rabs held Auburn to 171 yards on 51 plays. Defensive end Tyress Cunningham likely set a record with eight sacks in the game. It’s impossible to say that’s a record for sure because finding defensive stats before the MaxPreps era is nearly impossible. Still, it was an impressive outing.

So far, the E-Rabs have surrendered 39 points in three games. The one loss, 14-12, was to conference-leading Belvidere North in Belvidere a day after one of its expected starting linebackers died in a car accident.

The E-Rabs will see how far their defense can carry them. They play perennial NIC-10 contenders Harlem and Hononegah in the next two weeks.
