Defending champion Vikings open NIC-10 soccer play with win

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings, who tied for the NIC-10 conference title last year, kicked off its NIC-10 schedule with an easy 7-0 win over Jefferson.

The co-championship last year was the first time a RPS 205 school had won a share of the NIC-10 title since 1998.

The Vikings should be strong contenders again this year. They return first-team all-conference stars Courtney Hinrichs and Olivia Zedeker at forward and midfield and Teyah Palmer at sweeper.

Thursday’s win improved Guilford to 3-1 overall. The Vikings lost to Algonquin Jacobs, 1-0, on March 12 to open the season but then followed up with wins over Rockford Christian, 10-0, and Winnebago, 4-0. The Vikings play at Woodstock Saturday.
