Auburn’s Martinez wins national boxing award

Auburn senior Angel Martinez was named one of the best amateur boxers of the year for 2017.

Martinez was one of six fighters to receive Under Armour’s 2017 Boxer of the Year Award. It’s the second year Under Armour and USA Boxing collaborated to name the top male and female amateur fighters.

The honors were announced Tuesday. Martinez was named the 2017 Youth Male Boxer of the Year after winning the 108-pound USA Youth Open Championship in Charleston, West Virginia, and his second Youth National Championship in Salt Lake City this past December. Martinez, who wants to make the 2020 U.S. Olympic boxing team, got his first taste of international competition. Martinez traveled to Germany to fight in the Bradenburg Cup, winning a silver medal.

2017 Elite Female Boxer of the Year – Virginia Fuchs, Kemah, Texas.
2017 Elite Male Boxer of the Year – Duke Ragan, Cincinnati, Ohio.
2017 Youth Female Boxer of the Year – Citialli Ortiz, Coachella, California.
2017 Junior Female Boxer of the Year – Gabriela Fundora, Coachella, California.
2017 Junior Male Boxer of the Year – Dante Benjamin, Shaker Heights, Ohio.
