Auburn, East, Guilford, Jefferson end 2018 with wins

The Rockford Public Schools boys basketball progams finished 2018 strong with all four winning their Christmas tournament finales Saturday.

East suffered its first loss of the season Friday night against a tough Springfield Southeast team (11-1), but the E-Rabs rallied to knock off Lincoln, 64-55, to take third place in the Collinsville Prairie Farms Holiday Classic with a 3-1 record.

Sincere Parker led East (14-1) with 31 points. He scored 11 of those in the fourth quarter as East pulled away from a 43-43 tie after three. Parker had 84 points in the four games.

Sha’den Clanton had 11 against Lincoln (11-3) and 58 points in the tournament. Chris Burnell, who became East’s all-time leading scorer on Saturday, was held to four Saturday. He had 55 for the tournament.

Jefferson knocked off Walton Payton College Prep of Chicago, 64-58, Saturday to go 3-2 in the Hinkle Holiday Classic.

The J-Hawks, now 10-6, also recorded wins over Woodstock Marian and Cary-Grove, while dropping games against Johnsburg and South Elgin.

Sophomore Latrell Graham led Jefferson with 18 points and junior guard George Williams added 16. Graham had 78 points in the five games, while Williams had 69.

The Auburn Knights moved back to even on the season at 8-8 by drubbing Oak Lawn Richards, 72-57, in the Hinsdale Holiday Classic.

It was the only breather Auburn had in the Christmas tourney. The Knights beat Westinghouse, 68-65, and dropped nail-biters to Chicago St. Rita, 54-52, and Hinsdale, 52-49.

Junior forward Javin Davis was big for the Knights on Saturday, leading Auburn with 14 points and scoring 43 in the four games. Justin Blake added 12 against Richards and sophomore point guard Josh Ausler had 11.

Guilford knocked off Yorkville, 66-61, in two overtimes Saturday to finish the Chuck Dayton Tournament in DeKalb at 2-2.

The Vikings are 7-7 on the season.
