Auburn, East in boys summer basketball league semifinals

Auburn and East advanced to tonight’s semifinals in the East Summer Varsity League basketball tournament Monday night.

The Knights, who were 5-1 in the three weeks of league play, knocked off Janesville Parker, 58-28, and Belvidere North, 49-40. Auburn will face Hononegah tonight at 6 p.m.

The E-Rabs, who were 3-3 the first three weeks, beat Beloit Memorial, 67-42, and Machesney Park Harlem, 73-57. East will face Winnebago in the semifinals also at 6 p.m.. The Indians got to the semis by edging Freeport, 56-53, and then ousting the previously undefeated Jefferson J-Hawks, 54-47. Jefferson had gone 6-0 in regular season play and then topped South Beloit, 61-15.

The J-Hawks will be playing for fifth place tonight. They face Harlem at 8 p.m. and if they win they take on the winner of Dixon or Belvidere North.

The finals will take place at 7 p.m. in East’s main gymnasium.
