Young American awards shows off best of RPS

The Rockford Register Star has been giving the Young American award to outstanding teenagers since the 1950s.

This year, the newspaper picked 17 outstanding young men and women and has been publishing a profile a day of each of the honorees.

A couple from this past week featured Rockford Public Schools students who excelled both in the classroom and in athletic competition.

Isaac Bernsten of Auburn plans to attend Notre Dame University and is considering majors in liberal studies and economics. His profile – Notre Dame-bound Isaac Bernsten of Rockford is an independent thinker – focused on his concern for the environment. Bernsten, 18, also is an outstanding tennis player. He teamed up with Dhruv Ramaswami to win the No. 2 NIC-10 doubles title to help power the Knights to their third straight conference championship.

Guilford’s Joe Gibbons will graduate from Guilford Wednesday with plans to attend Augustana College where he is considering majoring in actuarial science. He’s not only one of the Vikings’ top students, he’s one of their best track athletes as well – Rockford teen Joe Gibbons excels in the classroom and on the track.

This past week, Gibbons helped Guilford finish third in the NIC-10 track meet by taking first in the 800-meter run and taking part in the NIC-10-champion 4×800-meter relay team.
