West’s Parker added to IBCA Hall of Fame

NORMAL – Rex Parker, a starting guard for the 1954-1955 West Warriors state champion basketball team, ended a 32-year drought Saturday night.

Parker was the first Rockford Public Schools player inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame since 1987 when former West star Mark Sibley was inducted.

The ceremony took place at Redbird Arena at Illinois State University. It was a visit “home” for Parker, who went from West to play basketball at ISU, where he was a starter in 1959 and 1960.

In a way, it was also the second time Parker was added to the hall. The entire 1954-1955 team was inducted in 1982.

Parker also is the third player off that team inducted as an individual. Nolden Gentry, who went from West to play at Iowa, was part of the very first class in 1973. Johnny Wessels, the team’s leading scorer who went on to star at the University of Illinois, was inducted in 1974.
