Two RPS students place in Top of the State speech competition

ROCKFORD – Aryan Arora of Auburn and Jada Cox both brought home top five finishes in the Top of the State speech competition Saturday at Jefferson.

The IHSA holds a state competition for a number of different speaking competitions and Auburn and Jefferson will be in the DeKalb regional this Saturday. The state competition is Feb. 15-16 in Peoria.

This past Saturday was a significant warm up and the Top of the State drew students from 14 different schools.

Arora took third in impromptu speaking and Cox finished fifth in poetry reading. Jefferson’s Amina Hussein was a finalist in original verse but did not place.

District 205 has not had a student medal at state since 1995 when MaryEllen Beard took sixth in humorous duet acting.
