Team effort leads Vikings over Hononegah in key divisional matchup

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings took a major step towards winning the NIC-10 girls volleyball title with a straight-set win over Hononegah at Guilford.

The Vikings edged the Indians, 25-23, in the first set and the momentum carried over in set two, 25-13.

Coach Trace Noack said it was a balanced effort. Ella Holmstrom had six kills, two aces and seven digs. Abigail Smith had five kills, two aces and three digs and Cameron George was a demon on defense with 12 digs.

Like basketball and football, the NIC-10 has been split into two divisions with the winners of each facing each other in a crossover match for the NIC-10 championship.

Belvidere North, which has won the last three titles outright, is in the other division. Guilford and Hononegah, the two schools with a realistic chance of ending the Blue Thunder’s 53-match conference winning streak, are in the same division, battling it out to see who will get a chance to end that streak on April 24.

The Vikings play Belvidere North on April 8 and then has a rematch with the Indians at Hononegah on April 17.
