Spangler, Guilford running great, highlights annual 2.05 run

Jenny Spangler, the Guilford distance runner who went to to excel at Iowa and then make the U.S. Olympic team as a marathoner, will be in Rockford on May 26 as a special guest for the fifth annual 2.05 Run to benefit Rockford Public Schools’ physical education programs.

Spangler was inducted into the RPS Athletic Hall of Fame this year for her lifetime of running achievements. Spangler’s second place finish in the 1980 IHSA cross country state meet remains the highest ever for a District 205 girls cross country runner. At Iowa,¬†she led the Hawkeyes to their first Big 10 Cross Country Championship in 1982 and earned All-American status in cross country, the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races in track. Spangler then took up distance running and that culminated in her qualifying for the 1996¬†Atlanta Summer Olympics in the marathon.

Spangler was unable to attend the ceremony in February. She’ll be in Rockford all day on the 26th. She’ll be meeting running enthusiasts from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Fleet Feet Sports, 1653 N. Alpine Road, before heading over to Prairie Street Brewing as a special guest for the 2.05 Run.
