Six E-Rabs, one Viking qualify for state track meet

HUNTLEY – The East E-Rabs will have six athletes in next weekend’s IHSA Class 3A track meet.

They’ll be joined by one Guilford jumper.

East’s Marquez Gray again led the way for East at Wednesday night’s Huntley sectional. Gray ran a personal record :10.99 in the 100 meters to tie for first and followed it up with a second-place finish in the 200.

Gray then teamed with Javius Catlin, CJ Berry and Deterrace Dotson to take second in the 4×100-meter relay.

Makarious Luster also made it as an individual, finishing second in the 400 meters.

Joining the sprinters will be senior thower Hunter Scanlon, who took second place in both the discus and the shot put.

Guilford’s A’Tiq Muhammad will be making the trip as well after a dominant win in the long jump. His jump of 7.09 meters easily outdistanced Connor Frank of Algonquin Jacobs, who had a leap of 6.97 meters.

As good as last night was for Rockford Public Schools athletes, it could have been even better. Guilford’s Joe Gibbons finished third in the 800 meters, getting beat by a personal record from Isai Morales of Hampshire.

Brandon Ferguson of Auburn was third in the 300-meter hurdles. Ferguson ran a personal record of :42.80, but he was beaten by a personal record of :42.57 by Jonathan Tegel of Crystal Lake Central.

East’s 4×200- and 4×400-meter-relay teams also came in third.

A Rockford Public Schools athlete hasn’t placed at state since 2017 when Guilford’s Kevion Polk was sixth in the triple jump.

East, which was for decades the dominant NIC-10 track program, hasn’t had an athlete place at state since Steve Nelson took seventh in the pole vault in 1997.
