RPS stars Garcia and Sayyalinh show big things ahead

ROCKFORD – Two RPS 205 incoming seniors showed this weekend that big things could be ahead for them in the 2019-2020 school year.

On Saturday, Auburn’s Jonah Garcia sprinted to first place in the K-12 division of the 35th annual SwedishAmerican State Street Mile.

Garcia finished fourth in the NIC-10 cross country meet as a junior and won the 800-meter conference title in track and field. He ran the mile, which is slightly downhill, in 4:30.7.

On Sunday,  Katelynn Sayyalinh made history by winning the Rockford Women’s Golf Classic by beating University of Lamar golfer and Loves Park resident Carson Racich in the match play finals.

Sayyalinh is just the third high school player to win the Women’s City in 26 years, joining Guilford’s Kara Soderberg and East’s Madasyn Pettersen. Both Soderberg and Pettersen were IHSA state golf champions. Sayyalinh finished fourth in the NIC-10 last year and 43rd in the state tournament.
