RPS 205 teams split on opening night of Chicagoland Summer Showcase

ROCKFORD – The first night of play in the Chicagoland Summer Showcase drew coaches across the country eager to see players from seven states square off.

Rockford Publics Schools 205 teams acquitted themselves well.

East beat Hamilton, Ohio, 53-50, in overtime and Jefferson topped Galeburg, 51-38. Guilford, however, fell to Aurora Waubonsie Valley, 58-46, and Bellevue West, Nebraska, knocked off Auburn, 52-44. All Friday’s games were at Rock Valley College.

Still, the fact that RPS schools got a chance to learn and grow against top programs from outside the region is a major plus, and it allowed Rockford talent to measure itself against higher caliber players. Josh Ausler, Auburn’s top returning player, got to face off against Bellevue West’s Chucky Hepburn. Hepburn has 10 Division 1 scholarship offers, but Ausler outscored him, 12-8.

The action picks up at 10:10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Jefferson plays Madison La Follette, East plays Omaha Benson of Nebraska and Guilford takes on Chicago Schurz with all three games at RVC. Auburn plays Evansville Bosse of Indiana at 5:10 p.m.

After the second game, the teams enter bracket play. There are 32 teams in the big school division this weekend and eight in the small school division.
