Rockford packs downtown to celebrate Fred VanVleet

ROCKFORD – Auburn graduate Fred VanVleet has always been a fan favorite in Rockford, but over the last two months he became part of the international conversation as he played an integral part in leading the Toronto Raptors to an NBA championship.

Saturday, though, he was back in Rockford soaking up the local love as about 8,000 fans jammed Rockford City Market to honor his impressive and still somewhat improbable rise to stardom.

VanVleet, who has made a career of never getting ruffled, told the Rockford Register Star that he is still getting trying to adjust to being a role model to so many in Rockford.

“I’m just living it. I don’t know what that means,” he said before the celebration. “I know I’m a big deal to some people and I know what that entails, so I try to live right and take my steps the right way and be a good role model for kids and come back and do things for the community.”

The media was out in force covering every step of the homecoming for the player who led the Knights to third place in the IHSA state tournament, Wichita State to a Final Four and finally Toronto to an NBA title. You can check out the coverage below:
