Rising Auburn needs one more win to match best baseball season this millennium

ROCKFORD – The Auburn Knights have ridden three big bats and the solid pitching of Payton Alexander to an 8-8 record in the NIC-10 this season.

Auburn has two conference games left, both against Harlem. Tonight’s is at Auburn and Friday’s is at Harlem. A year after going 1-17 in the NIC-10, the Knights, under coach Ryne Billesbach, need one more win to have just their second .500 or better conference record since 2000.

Garrett Wallace, Adam Kuhar and Brayden Bidwell have powered Auburn at the plate. Wallace is hitting .420 with nine stolen bases and 13 runs scored. Kuhar is hitting .357 with a .481 on-base percentage. Bidwell is batting .340 and leading the team with 11 RBI.

Alexander has been the key on the mound. He’s 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings pitched.

The last time Auburn had a non-losing season in the NIC-10 was 2008 when the team went 9-9 behind Jacob Tresemer, Andrew Myers and Wayne Hendryx.
