RPS athletes win four events in NIC-10 boys track meet

Several Rockford Public Schools athletes dazzled in the NIC-10 boys track meet the past two nights in Freeport and most of those athletes will be back in 2017-2018.

District 205 athletes won four of the 18 events, claimed five second places and three third places.

  • Junior Syreal Holland of Auburn won the 100 meters (:11.18), took third in the 200 meters and ran the second leg on both the third-place 4×100-relay and second-place 4×200-relay teams.
  • Senior Tyvionne Horton of East was second to Holland in the 100 meters, but he ran leadoff on the first-place 4×100- and 4×200-relay teams.
  • East junior Noah Friske was second in the both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.
  • Jordan Watts, an East sophomore, took third in the high jump.
  • East senior Devontae Sims completed a remarkable senior year by winning the shot put with a throw of 51-5. Sims is the first District 205 shot put champion since Xavier Kimbrough of Auburn in 2012. He also was the NIC-10 defensive MVP as a linebacker and the leading rebounder and first-team All-NIC-10 in basketball.

East finished fifth with 64 points, Auburn seventh with 44 and Guilford ninth with four.
