Nevenhoven leads Knights to sectional tennis title

ROCKFORD – Auburn’s Quinten Nevenhoven heads to next week’s IHSA Class 2A state meet with plenty of momentum.

The senior completed two days of complete domination in which he dropped just two games in four matches.

Saturday, he blanked Thomas Ptacin of Hononegah, 6-0, 6-0, and then let up a bit against John Wallace of Crystal Lake Central, winning 6-0, 6-2.

This will be Nevenhoven’s fourth straight trip to the state tennis tournament. He’s played well there but yet to place, going 11-6 in his first three trips.

Nevenhoven will be joined by Chris Park, who went 1-1 Saturday to finish in third place in singles, but the win was a big one.

Park lost to Wallace, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals but rallied to Ptacin, 6-2, 6-2. That gave Auburn enough points to win the team title for the second straight year. Auburn’s 15 points just edged Crystal Lake Central’s 14 points.
