Luster, Muhammad bring back state track medals

A’Tiq Muhammad and Makarious Luster ended a medals drought for Rockford Public Schools at the IHSA 3A state track meet.

Muhammad and Luster each brought back sixth-place medals, the first medals won by RPS athletes since 2017 when Kevion Polk finished sixth in the triple jump.

Guilford’s Muhammad soared to sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters, while East’s Luster was sixth in the 400 meters with a personal record of :49.89.

It was a dazzling finish for Luster, the NIC-10 basketball MVP. East hadn’t had a state track medalist since 1997.

As good as the day was, it could have been even better. Sprinter Marquez Gray was 10th in the 100 meters and 11th in the 200. Hunter Scanlon finished 11th in the discus with a throw of 45.27 meters.

No RPS athletes were medalists in the girls 3A state track meet, but that should change next year. Guilford sophomore Michelle Gasmund was 13th in the 800 meters and the Guilford 4×200-meter relay team of Carreanna Curtis, Anastasia Bruce, A’Yana Gray and Jolena Site finished 10th.
