Jefferson dominates freshman Christmas basketball tourney

ROCKFORD – Jefferson is the defending NIC-10 conference champion in boys basketball and the J-Hawks are off to a 10-6 start overall under new coach John Rossato.

Judging by the results of the annual Jefferson Christmas freshman basketball tournament, Rossato will have plenty of talent to work with in the coming seasons.

Jefferson was one of two schools – Hampshire was the other – to go 4-0 in the tournament that was played the weekend before Christmas.

The J-Hawks had the more impressive run. Jefferson beat Rockford Lutheran, 70-48, Harlem, 54-21, Maple Park Kaneland, 61-30, and Elgin Larkin, 61-33. The IHSA adopted a running clock rule this season. If a team goes up by 30 points at any time in the fourth quarter, the clock runs continuously until the end of the game.

Jefferson had running clocks in three of its four games.

Auburn and East each went 2-2 in the tournament. The Knights scored wins over Guilford and Larkin, while losing to Harlem and Lutheran. The E-Rabs beat Belvidere and Rock Falls, while falling to Belvidere North and Rockton Hononegah.

The Vikings were 1-3, beating Larkin.
