Jefferson takes second in East hoops summer league

Latrell Graham of Jefferson launches a three-point shot attempt against Hononegah in Tuesday night’s East Varsity High School Summer League championship game.

ROCKFORD – The Jefferson J-Hawks showed again they should be in the mix for the NIC-10 title this next winter by taking second in the East High School Varsity Summer League Tuesday night.

The J-Hawks finished the month-long league with a 7-3 record, including the regular season. They played most of the month without Latrell Graham, who averaged 14 points per game as a sophomore.

Graham was back for the East summer league tournament. The J-Hawks crushed overmatched squads from South Beloit and Janesville Parker on Monday night. Jefferson then rallied from an early 16-6 deficit against Lutheran to beat the Crusaders, 49-39.

In the finals, the J-Hawks fell short to Hononegah, falling 62-57. Still, combined with Jefferson’s strong play this past weekend in the Chicagoland Summer Showcase, the J-Hawks showed they are one of several teams with realistic shots to win the NIC-10 next season.

All three RPS 205 teams playing in the summer league played well. Auburn went 8-2 overall, while East went 7-3 as well.
