J-Hawks baseball team rallies to top Belvidere

ROCKFORD – The Jefferson J-Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to knock off Belvidere, 9-8, for their first win of the season.

Brandon Pruitt was the big star at the plate. He collected four hits in six at bats, scoring a run and driving in three, as Jefferson (1-16) had its second best run output of the year. That included the game-winning two-run single. Brodrick Hardy had two hits in four at bats and scored two runs.

On the mound, Rogelio Belmontes took over in the third inning and picked up the win by pitching the final six innings, striking out six and giving up three earned runs.

It’s a big win for the J-Hawks and coach Cyrus Wimberly, who is working hard to rebuild the program. Wimberly was a three-time NIC-10 all-conference shortstop at Guilford. Jefferson hasn’t won as many as five NIC-10 baseball games since 2013.

The J-Hawks are scheduled to finish their NIC-10 schedule Friday with another game against the Bucs in Belvidere.
