IESA state chess tourney shows more RPS talent coming

PEORIA – Thurgood Marshall’s 8th grade chess team took fifth in the state at the IESA chess tournament in Peoria on Feb. 22-23.

Fifty-three schools competed in the eighth grade tournament.

Andrew Dmitriev led the Mustangs with a 6-1 record and tied for fourth overall. Samraat Zagade was 5-1-1 and tied for 11th. Ethan Vanderkolk and William Yang finished in a group tied for 15th. Vanderkolk went 5-2 in the tournament, while Yang was 4-1-2.

Ian Wan was Marshall’s top sixth grade player. He was 5-2, which was good for a tie for sixth place.
