Huge night for Guilford sprint relay teams!

Seven Guilford runners teamed up Thursday night to qualify all three of Guilford’s girls sprint relay teams to next week’s IHSA Class 3A state meet.

Those seven will be joined at the state meet by super sophomore Michelle Gasmund.

Carreanna Curtis and A’Yana Gray teamed up with Riyyah Chatman and Jolena Site to win the 4×100-meter relay at the Antioch sectional with a time of :49.49.

Curtis, Gray and Site then teamed up with Anastasia Bruce to win the 4×200 relay with a 1:47.45.

Curtis and Gray then ran with Mikayla Durkin and Audrey Ryan to take second in the 4×400-meter relay, running the race in 4:07.19.

Gasmund punched her ticket to state by winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.18.

Two other RPS athletes just missed on their state bids. Auburn’s Essence Horton-Graves finished third in the 100-meter dash, running a personal record of :12.67. And Lillian Jarrett of Guilford finished third in the triple jump.

The 3A state finals will take place at Eastern Illinois University on June 12. The last time an RPS girls track athlete placed at state was Auburn’s Alexandria McCoy in 2016 when she took sixth in the shot put. The last Guilford athlete to place was Kaylin Himes in 2006 when she was sixth in the pole vault.
