Guilford’s Johnson heads back to state track meet

ROCKFORD – Guilford junior Shaniah Johnson kept the Rockford Public Schools girls track season going Thursday night by qualifying for the IHSA Class 3A state track meet.

Johnson finished third in the Antioch sectional in the triple jump with a leap of 36-10 3/4. She surpassed the qualifying distance in preliminaries and skipped the finals to compete in other running events.

It will be Johnson’s second straight state meet. Guilford coach Gregory Ford said she has potential to jump even better next week.

“At times, (she’s) been inconsistent this year, but towards the of this season sheJ’s finally hitting her strides,” Ford said in an email. “I think she is very poised to break out downstate.”

Johnson finished third in the triple jump in 2018 and then won the conference title last week.
