Guilford win sets up Tuesday volleyball showdown

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings rallied to remain undefeated in girls volleyball, setting up next Tuesday’s battle with Belvidere North, the three-time defending NIC-10 champions.

At Boylan last night, Guilford dropped the first game, 25-23. It was the first set the Vikings had lost this season. Guilford rallied to win the final two sets over the Titans relatively drama free, 25-17, 25-21.

The Vikings are now 6-0 and will play Harlem on Saturday at noon at Guilford and then the Blue Thunder on Tuesday. The Blue Thunder are 8-0 and have lost just one set as well. That was against Crystal Lake Central. North, which is 5-0 in NIC-10 play, has now 55 straight conference matches.

Like basketball, the NIC-10 has been split into two divisions and the winners of each will play each other for the NIC-10 title on April 24. North and Guilford are in opposite divisions. Guilford’s April 1 win over Hononegah gives it a leg up in its division, meaning Saturday’s match could be a conference-championship preview.
