Guilford to honor former track coach Lee Marks tonight!

ROCKFORD – Guilford will host a dedication ceremony tonight to rename its track in honor of legendary coach Lee Marks.

Marks was the first African American to coach a varsity sport in the Rockford School District when he took over the Guilford track program in 1967. He made the honor last, coaching the Vikings track program for 47 years. Although Guilford won just one conference title during his tenure, he coached scores of outstanding athletes, including three state champions – Dave Calvert in 1967, Dave Halle in 1984 and Garrett Nelson in 1999.

Tonight also is homecoming for Guilford so if competed for coach Marks, you should stop out to see the track renamed the Lee Marks Memorial Track. To read more, including tonight’s schedule of events, go to RPS VIBE.
