Guilford in second with six-game soccer winning streak

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings, behind a huge game from Brayan Cuevas, moved into second in the NIC-10 with a 6-2 record after knocking off Belvidere, 3-2, Tuesday.

The Bucs certainly put a scare into Guilford, taking a 2-1 lead at the half before the Vikings scored twice for the win. Cuevas had all three goals Tuesday. Gaven Herrera assisted on two of them.

Guilford was the defending NIC-10 champions in boys soccer, but the Vikings lost the season-opener, 1-0, to Boylan after dominating play for most of the game and then lost to East by the same score in its second game.

The Vikings rebounded by winning its next six games, outscoring their opponents by a 25-4 margin.

Boylan, unfortunately, clinched the conference title with a 4-0 win over East on Tuesday that dropped the E-Rabs into a tie for third with Jefferson at 5-2. East closes its season at Auburn on Thursday against the high-scoring Knights, while Jefferson hosts winless Freeport. Overall, the four Rockford Public Schools soccer teams are 20-9 for the season.
