Guilford rallies for football win

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings rallied to beat Belvidere Friday night for a solid start to the abbreviated 2021 season.

The Vikings rallied to send the game into overtime before picking up a touchdown for a 20-14 win.

The Vikings did their damage entirely on the ground. Jordan Woods led with 84 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns. Javarrie Reynolds added 75 yards. All together, Guilford gained 281 yards on 59 carries and didn’t attempt a pass.

This is the third season under coach Denny Diduch, who came to Guilford after coaching Forreston to two Class 1A titles. It’s been a struggle to rebuild the Vikings program as Guilford has gone 1-17 over Diduch’s first two seasons.

The win puts Guilford on top of the NIC-10’s Division B along with Freeport, which secured a 42-8 win over rebuilding Jefferson. The J-Hawks went a solid 3-6 under first-year coach Jacob Arnold, but Jefferson has no returning starters.
