Guilford opens volleyball season with win over Auburn

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings, which harbor hopes of winning the school’s first NIC-10 volleyball title since 2016, scored a straight-set win over Auburn to open the volleyball season.

The Vikings have finished in the top three the past three seasons and this year return two first-team NIC-10 outside hitters in junior Ella Holmstrom and senior Kaitlyn Flynn.

Flynn on Tuesday had 11 kills and four digs in the 25-17, 25-17 win over the Knights, who were fourth in the NIC-10 in 2019-2020. Holmstrom had 11 kills, two aces and five digs. Grace Noakes, a 5-11 junior setter, directed traffic with 24 assists, five digs and two aces.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, girls volleyball will be following the same format as boys and girls basketball. The conference has been broken into two divisions and the winners of each will play in a conference title game.

The Vikings main competition in its division will be perennial NIC-10 power Hononegah. The Vikings play the Indians on April 1 at Guilford and April 17 at Hononegah. If the Vikings can beat out Hononegah in its division, they’ll likely play two-time defending conference champion Belvidere North in the title match. The Blue Thunder have gone a perfect 18-0 in conference play the past two seasons. Guilford plays North once in the regular season, on April 8 at Guilford.
