Guilford finishes girls summer league strong

MACHESNEY PARK – The Guilford Vikings downed Rockford Christian and Rockford Lutheran Thursday in the final night of the Harlem Girls Basketball Summer League.

The 48-21 win over the Lions and 30-22 win over the Crusaders improved the Vikings to 3-3 over the month-long league.

Rockford East also wrapped up its play by splitting a pair of game. The E-Rabs beat Rockford Christian, 28-18, but were edged by Woodstock North, 37-36.

Auburn was off Thursday. The Knights finshed a 6-0 run last week. The three teams combined to go 13-7 for the month of June.

Rockford Public Schools 205’s girls programs are in a unique situation this year in that all four teams will have new coaches when the season tips in November. Leon Smith has taken over at Guilford. Greg Fiorucci is the new coach at East and A. Nichole Lee-Black is coaching the Jefferson J-Hawks.

This past week, Auburn coach Darryl Watkins accepted the women’s head coaching job at Rock Valley College so the Knights will have a new coach as well.
