Guilford, Auburn swimmers qualify for state

BYRON РAuburn sophomore Ali Cushing and Guilford freshman Ella Gasparini both earned another weekend of swimming.

Cushing became the first Auburn swimmer – Carrie Zarse won three state titles as a diver – to qualify for state, swimming a 1:55.45 in the 200 yard freestyle at the Byron IHSA swimming and diving sectional.

Gasparini qualified in the 200-yard individual medley. Gasparini finished second to Cushing in the 200 IM at the NIC-10 championships last weekend, but she shaved more than four seconds off her time, swimming a 2:14.35.

The state meet is next weekend at Evanston Township High School.

Both Cushing and Gasparini are looking to be the first District 205 swimmers to place at state since Margo Stanfa took 11th in the 100 backstroke in 2008.
