Former East star leads RVC to volleyball nationals

ROCKFORD – The Rock Valley College Golden Eagles qualified for the NJCAA Division III national tournament for the first time since 2012, powered by the strong play of East graduate Mallory Hecox.

Kristy Pierce, who coached for 34 years in high school, winning 941 games, took over the program this season and had just three returning players. Hecox and former Jefferson setter Salina Oudomsouk were two of those players.

Pierce was able to quickly mold the freshman-dominated squad into a winner and the Golden Eagles will play Thursday at noon in Rochester, Minnesota, in what may just be a preview next year. Fifteen of the 18 RVC players are freshman, a group that includes former Guilford middle blocker Alayna Gorham.

Derek Bayne of WREX-13 TV highlighted the success of the Golden Eagles in general and Hecox in particular in a story Monday night, “Mallory Hecox helps lead RVC volleyball to nationals.”
