Flinn’s Joseph Pineda wins IESA wrestling title

DEKALB – Joseph of Pineda of Flinn Middle School swept through four matches to win the first Illinois Elementary School Association state wrestling championship Saturday in District 205 history.

Pineda was competing at 215 pounds and won his first two matches by pin. He then edged Jordan Lewis of Woodridge Jefferson, 2-1, in the semifinals before beating Nathan Wemstrom of Buffalo Grove Cooper, 3-1, to claim the title.

Pineda was one of nine wrestlers from Flinn and Lincoln Middle School to advance to the IESA tournament at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center.

Skyler James of Flinn was the only wrestler to place, taking fifth at 275 pounds. James won his first three matches to reach the semifinals. There he got edged, 1-0, by Hunter Otto of Normal Chiddix. James was pinned in wrestlebacks, but he then rebounded to win his fifth-place match over future NIC-10 rival Javon Thompson of Freeport Carl Sandburg.
