East’s Hayes to transfer from New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Former Rockford East star Marcus Hayes will transfer from the University of New Mexico after leading the nation in punt return average.

The Lobos went 3-9 this season, but Hayes was one of the reasons for hope going forward. As a starting safety, Hayes had 51 tackles for the season, two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble and two interceptions. He was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in October.

Hayes returned 15 punts for the Lobos and averaged 21.2 yards per return with one touchdown.

Hayes announced his intentions to transfer on Twitter at the end of November. He hasn’t announced where he will transfer to.

Hayes was an all-NIC-10 safety for East in 2016.
