East ties school record with win over Belvidere

ROCKFORD – The East E-Rabs won their 26th game of the season with a 77-56 blowout of Belvidere at East Friday night.

The game was a runaway from the beginning. East scored 32 of the first 46 points and the struggling Bucs – now 4-23 on the season – trailed by double-digits throughout.

East clinched the outright NIC-10 boys basketball title with the win. The E-Rabs lead by four games over Harlem with just three left to play before the IHSA regionals begin.

East also improved to 26-2 on the year, matching the win totals of the 1947-1948 E-Rabs (26-4) and 1960-1961 E-Rabs (26-2). The ’47-48 squad finished second in the state and the ’60-61 team advanced to the IHSA Elite Eight.

The big regular season question now is whether the E-Rabs can match the 1980-1981 East team that went 18-0 in conference play.

Since 1963-1964, when the conference then called the Big Eight expanded conference play to 14 games, only 16 teams have navigated conference play perfectly. Those teams are listed below:

1964-1965: Freeport (14-0)
1966-1967: West (14-0)
1968-1969: West (14-0)
1973-1974: Freeport (16-0)
1980-1981: East (16-0)
1983-1984: Boylan (18-0)
1990-1991: Boylan (16-0)
1991-1992: Boylan (16-0)
1996-1997: Boylan (16-0)
1997-1998: Boylan (16-0)
2001-2002: Boylan (16-0)
2010-2011: Auburn (16-0)
2014-2015: Auburn (16-0)
2015-2016: Boylan (16-0)
2016-2017: Boylan (16-0)

The 1978-1979 E-Rabs went 9-0 in what was then the Big Nine. Conference schedules were abbreviated in 1977-1978 and 1978-1979 as fallout from District 205 not having sports in 1976-1977.

East has a couple of significant hurdles left in its quest. The E-Rabs play 17-9 Harlem on Wednesday and rapidly improving Auburn on Friday. The Knights crushed Freeport, 81-59, Friday to improve to 10-5 in the conference and 16-10 overall.
