East takes control of Division B with record-setting win

ROCKFORD – The East E-Rabs took advantage of Jefferson’s rebuilding football program to set school and modern NIC-10 records in an 86-6 win on Saturday.

Jefferson had no returning starters this season and have yet to win. East, meanwhile, steamrolled both Belvidere and Guilford after losing its season-opener to Boylan. So Saturday figured to be a struggle for the J-Hawks.

Still, the 86 points put up by East set several marks. It was the most ever scored by an East High School team. It was the most scored in a Northern Illinois Conference football game since Rockford defeated Joliet 100-0 back in 1920. That was well before the concept of a running clock.

The win put East in the unquestioned driver’s seat in the NIC-10’s B Division. The E-Rabs host the Freeport Pretzels (3-1) on Friday night. The winner will play the winner of this week’s Harlem-Boylan game for the NIC-10 title.
