East grad off to fast start in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Marcus Hayes, a former All-NIC-10 football star for East, was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for a dominating performance Saturday.

Hayes, a redshirt freshman for the Lobos, recorded four tackles and had a pair of interceptions, including returning one for a 60-yard touchdown, in the fourth quarter of New Mexico’s 42-25 win over rival New Mexico State.

“I saw the dude go in motion and I knew I had to take him,” Hayes told the DailyLobo.com. “I saw the second receiver try and pick me so I knew he wasn’t going to go over the top, my instinct just told me to undercut it and the ball came to me.”

Hayes is hardly a one-hit wonder for New Mexico. According to the graders at Pro Football Focus, Hayes is the No. 4 run defender in all of Division 1 college football so far this year. Against Big 10 power Wisconsin, Hayes had five solo tackles and five assists, one forced fumble and recovery. He’s also returning punts.
