Auburn’s Nevenhoven wins top female athlete award

ROCKFORD – Auburn tennis star Belen Nevenhoven was named Female Athlete of the Year Thursday night in the Rockford Register Star’s annual All Star Preps Best of Rock River Valley awards.

Normally, the announcement comes during a grand gala. Thursday’s awards ceremony was conducted online because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Register Star made up for that disappointment by recruiting national sports figures to take part. Nevenhoven’s honor was announced by NFL football star Patrick Mahomes of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Nevenhoven was honored for finishing second in the state in Class 2A tennis, tying the highest finish in NIC-10 history.

Other Rockford Public Schools athletes honored Thursday:

  • Girls golf MVP: Katelyn Sayyalinh of Guilford.
  • Boys soccer: Branden Harmsen, Guilford.
  • Boys swimming: Jacob Stroup, Guilford.
