Auburn’s Lowe, Guilford swimmers among local highlights

The Rockford Register Star featured a Rockford Public School alum and two Guilford swimmers in outstanding features in the past week.

Vederian Lowe, who helped pave the way for two NIC-10 football titles at Auburn, is making a strong case for an NFL career at his final season at Illinois. This past week, he graded out as the best offensive lineman in all of NCAA Division 1 football, according to Pro Football Focus.

This week is Lowe’s final Homecoming game in Champaign and he talked to Jay Taft of the Register Star about balancing a growing family, improving his play and maintaining his grades.

On Oct. 4, Taft talked to Guilford’s Mikayla Durkin and Ella Gasparini. The two recently broke school swimming records. Gasparini topped the 100-yard breaststroke record that had stood for 35 years and the 200 individual medley that had stood for seven years. Durkin topped Guilford’s 50 yard freestyle record that had been in place for 28 years.

The two are a year apart in class age but have been friends since they were 4 years old.
