Auburn tennis player’s state run stopped in semis

BUFFALO GROVE – Auburn sophomore Belen Nevenhoven made NIC-10 history when she knocked off Naperville Nequa Valley’s Alex Savu in the IHSA Class 2A quarterfinals Friday morning.

The 6-4, 6-4 win advanced a NIC-10 girls tennis player to an IHSA tennis semifinal for just the third time in conference history.

Nevenhoven’s state title dreams ended there, though, when Maria Goheen of Aurora West came back to beat Nevenhoven, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Nevenhoven has another chance to make conference history. Bogdonas’ fourth-place showing is the best ever for the NIC-10 in girls tennis. Nevenhoven can surpass that be beating Tyra Richardson of Chicago St. Ignatius College Prep. Richardson lost to Kiley Rabjohns of Lake Forest, 6-4, 6-2, in the other semifinal.
