Auburn senior adds another impressive boxing title

Rockford Auburn’s Angel Martinez added a Junior Olympics title to his growing array of medals.

Martinez won a USA Boxing National Championship back in December in Kansas City then followed it up with a National Golden Gloves title in Lafayette, Louisiana, in May. This past weekend, he was in Charleston, South Carolina, for the 2017 Junior Olympics, Prep Nationals and Youth Open Championships.

Martinez won three fights to win the 108-pound Youth Junior Olympic division. He beat Anthony Bustillos of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Aaron Lopez of Land O Lakes, Florida, by technical knockouts to reach the finals. In the title match, he beat Stephen Acosta of Dallas by decision, getting the nod from four of the five judges.

The left-hander, who will be a senior this year at Auburn, was the only winner in the youth of junior divisions from Illinois. California boxers won four titles. Wisconsin had three champions – Daniel Blancas (154-pound junior from Milwaukee), Rolando Vargas (141-pound youth from Milwaukee) and Luis Alverado (201-youth from Kenosha).
