Auburn, East wrestlers take seconds in frosh-soph/girls state tourney

SPRINGFIELD – Zander Guttridge of East and Kelsey Powell of Auburn both are bringing home second-place medals this weekend from the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

Guttridge took second place at 182 pounds in the IWCOA Frosh-Soph state championships. The tournament is for wrestlers who did not qualify for the IHSA state tournament.

Guttridge beat Ben Kingsbury of Lincolnway East, 7-1, Cedric Fairrow of Ottawa Township, 8-6, Andrew Pressley of Libertyville, 5-1, and Clay Cichowski of Maine South to reach the finals. There, Guttridge fell to Lou Gaddy of Marian Central, 11-3.

Powell was competing in the IWCOA’s third girls state wrestling championship. Powell beat Lilly Aljets of Mount Olive and Kansandra Perez of Elgin Larkin to reach the 164-pound title match. She lost the title match to Jacqueline McCain, also from Elgin Larkin.
