This year’s Academic All-Star nominees a historic group

The annual Academic All-Star Athletic awards will be handed out at the Coronado Theater on May 21 and the judges this year will have an amazingly difficult time choosing the most outstanding male and female student-athletes.

The male nominees this year:

Auburn, Angel Martinez

Martinez has won six national boxing championships since 2014, including a 2017 Golden Gloves title. He has been a member of USA Boxing for eight years and is the No. 1 ranked amateur flyweight in the United States, making him a favorite to make the 2020 U.S. Olympic boxing team. In the classroom, Martinez is a member of the National Honors Society, with a 3.9 grade point average.

East, Cole Bathje

Bathje is a four-year varsity athlete in cross country, swimming and track for the E-Rabs. He was team captain in all three sports and honorable mention all-NIC-10 in swimming in 2018. He has a 3.2 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, and has received a Founders Scholarship to Augustanta College where he plans to continue his swimming career.

Guilford, Kyle Thurston

Thurston is a four-year varsity swimmer who also ran cross country as a freshman. He was named All-NIC-10 in the 200-yard freestyle relay as a junior and in the 400-yard freestyle relay as a senior. A scholar athlete all four years, Thurston has a 4.0 GPA, which ranks first out of 336 seniors at Guilford. Thurston received an academic scholarship to the University of Minnesota.

Jefferson, Jacob Miles

Miles was a member of the J-Hawks football and swim teams. He was named special mention All-NIC-10 in swimming. He has a 3.6 GPA and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The female nominees:

Auburn, Elle Maculan

Maculan is a four-year distance running star for the Knights. She finished in the top 10 in the NIC-10 cross country meet her freshman and senior years and was a four-time sectional qualifier. In track, she was all-NIC-10 as a sophomore and a junior and holds the school record in the pole vault. Maculan has a 3.4 GPA, which includes 13 Advanced Placement courses.

East, Erin Stroberg

Stroberg has starred in volleyball, basketball and softball for the E-Rabs. Her best sport is basketball, where she was first-team All-NIC-10 after averaging 16 points and leading the conference in rebounding. Stroberg signed a basketball scholarship to play at McKendree College. Stroberg has a 3.7 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Guilford, Celene Morris

Morris was a three-time All-NIC-10 volleyball player, including MVP as a junior, when she lead Guilford to its first conference title in 20 years. She signed a full scholarship to play volleyball at NCAA Division 1 North Carolina Central University. She has a 3.9 GPA, which ranks 15th out of 336 students at Guilford.

Jefferson, Ausha Whitaker

A member of Jefferson’s competitive cheer squad. Ausha was a recipient of a RAMM (Rockford Area Minority Management) Scholarship. She has a 3.5 GPA, is a Student Ambassador and member of the National Honor Society. Whitaker plans to study engineering in college.
