19 things to celebrate from 2019: No. 4 – Nevenhoven’s state run

Auburn tennis star Belen Nevenhoven became the first Rockford Public Schools player to make it to an IHSA girls tennis final this past spring.

She got off to a strong start in her bid to join West’s Dan Wykse as the only state tennis champions – boys or girls – in RPS and NIC-10 history, but defending state champion Kiley Rabjohns of Lake Forest won 10 of the final 13 games to leave Nevenhoven as the runnerup.

Nevenhoven, now a senior who finished fourth in the state as a sophomore, won more games off Rabjohns than any other play in the last two IHSA state tournaments. And she’s likely to get another shot in 2020. Rabjohns is a senior as well.
