Board Members

The Rockford Sports Coalition board is made up athletic directors from District 205 high schools, the Rockford Public School Director of Athletics, and interested community members. Board members may be contacted at info@rockfordsportscoalition.org.

Current Board Members:

Ted Liebovich
Ted is one of the founding board members of Rockford Sports Coalition and has served continuously since 1992. Ted was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from Rockford High School. He was active in high school sports. His son ran cross country and played on the tennis team at Guilford High School. Ted is a lawyer in Rockford where he lives with his wife.

Brian Elliott
Brian is a certified public accountant and partner at a local accounting firm. He oversees the financial aspects of the Rockford Sports Coalition. Elliott was a three sport high school athlete and was a member of the 1986 Division III national champion football team while at Augustana College. He also was a member of the 1985 and 1986 Rockford Redwings, which qualified for the fast pitch national softball tournaments. He resides in the Rockford area with his wife and daughter.

Mat Parker
Mat is Director of Athletics, Activities and Program Development for the Rockford Public School District. He has a master’s degree in psychology and foundations of education from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree from Castleton State University. Mat was a four sport high school athlete and four-year starter for Castleton’s for men’s basketball program and is currently 8th all-time in scoring. Parker taught history and coached in Winnebago and South Beloit for 13 years and revived a struggling SOBO boys basketball program earning their first regional championship in 31 years and three straight 20 plus win seasons. He resides in Rockford with his wife Jessica and two children who work and attend Rockford Public Schools.

Rick Durso
Rick was born and raised in Holly, MI and moved to Rockford in 2001 after graduating college from Oakland University. Rick has been a public school teacher in Rockford since 2001 teaching at various grade levels before settling at Haskell for six years and most recently, at Johnson Elementary where he currently teaches 4th Grade. While at Haskell, he coached the girls basketball team in REBA, winning the championship in 2006. He is currently the REBA Coordinator for the basketball teams at Johnson Elementary. He is married to Amy Durso, who is also a public school teacher in Rockford. They have two children.

Jason Todd
Jason is a swiss army knife in the entrepreneur world. He is CEO of IKON Electric and Founder of Thinker Profit, a business development and marketing company located in Rockford, IL. Jason joined the Rockford Sports Coalition board in 2012. He was born and raised in Rockford, and attended Rock Valley College and Bradley University. Jason has three children in area schools; one in the middle school gifted program. His children swim for the YMCA RAYS where Jason serves as a YMCA Swim Official and on the Parent Advisory Committee.

Mike Armato
Michael serves as the Athletic Director at Jefferson High School. Michael has 18 years’ experience in education and 15 years in the field of athletics.  He holds a BA in Education from Rockford University,  an MA in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy, and an MA in Educational Leadership from Western Governors University.  A long time baseball coach, Michael has served at Rock Valley College, Durand High School, and Aurora Central Catholic High School.  Michael is a certified IHSA Baseball and Softball official and resides in Rockford with his two children.

Augie Toldo
Augie is the Athletic Director at Guilford High School.  He has 26 years of experience in education and 14 years in an administrator position.  Augie attended Rock Valley College and Illinois State University and earned his BA in Education.  He received his Type 75 Certification from Aurora University.  Augie coached boys basketball and baseball at Guilford, Jefferson, and East High School.  He was also, Head Girls Basketball coach at Guilford for three years.  Augie is married to Kathy Toldo and they have two children.

Roy Sackmaster
Roy teaches Criminal Law and Sociology at East High School and has been the head boys basketball coach there for 12 years.  Roy was a three-sport athlete at Boylan High School and then played both football and basketball at Rock Valley College and Loras College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Education. Roy earned a Master’s of Science degree in Sport Management in 2005 from Northern Illinois and another Master’s of Arts in School Leadership from Concordia University of Chicago in 2009.  Roy Sackmaster is married to Abigail Sackmaster has three children.

Abby Sackmaster
Abigail has been the Head Girl’s Volleyball coach at East High School since 2013.  She played volleyball at Campbell University in North Carolina after a stellar playing career at Hononegah High School, where she was named the NIC-10 Conference MVP her senior year.  Abigail has also earned a Masters of Arts degree in teaching from Rockford University.  Before coming to East, Abigail was the head coach at Lutheran High School  and Rock Valley College where her team won a national championship in 2012.  Abigail is married to Roy Sackmaster with whom she has two stepchildren and a son.

Emily Tropp
Emily serves as project coordinator for district athletics and fine arts for the Rockford Public Schools. She joined the school district after 15 years of working as a sports reporter for the Rockford Register Star. Emily grew up in Battle Creek, Mich., and received her B.S. degree in journalism at Central Michigan University. She has two children, Grace and Ethan, who attend Rockford Public Schools.

Gary Griffin
Gary is the Athletic Director and head football coach at East. Father of Taylor, Jalen, and Megan, and pop-pop to little Reghan. Gary is a Rockford native that attended Concordia University in Wisconsin, majoring in secondary education and biology. He taught and coached in Milwaukee for 11 years before leaving to coach college football at the University of Dubuque. Gary returned to Rockford to become the Athletic Director at Rockford Lutheran where he worked for four years before coming to District 205 as the East football coach and Dean of Students.

Brad Pemberton
Brad is the Dean of Athletics and Activities at Rockford Auburn High School. Brad was a three-sport athlete in high school and two-sport athlete at Rockford College while graduating with honors in 2009.  Brad has coached boys and girls basketball and volleyball at both the middle and high school levels over the past ten years.  Brad previously taught and was the Athletic Director at Kennedy Middle School as well as serving as the Director of Middle School Sports for RPS205 in 2016-2017 before coming to Rockford Auburn.  Brad led Kennedy to a 20-win boys basketball season and the boys volleyball team to an undefeated perfect season in 2017, the school’s first conference championship. Brad lives in Machesney Park with his wife, Courtney, and their two dogs, Kaner and Rizzo.

Gene Lee
This is Gene’s second time around on the RSC board, having served for about 10 years in the 1990s and 2000s. Gene is a Rockford East graduate who now is the head wrestling coach at East. He is married and has a daughter in Rockford Public Schools.

Kevin Vest
Kevin is the Athletic Director at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove after serving six years as the head baseball coach and sport coordinator at Rock Valley College in Rockford.  Prior to his time at Rock Valley, Kevin made coaching stops at Illinois College, Knox College, MacMurray College and Springfield College of Illinois in addition to serving two seasons as the bench coach for the Rockford Riverhawks.  Kevin and his wife, Alicia, reside in Loves Park with their daughter who attends Rockford Public Schools.

Cathy Bayer
Cathy is a communications coordinator for Rockford Public Schools. Prior to coming to RPS 205, she worked as a reporter for the Rockford Register Star and covered education. She made Rockford her home in 2008 after earning a journalism degree from Eastern Illinois University.

Matt Vosberg
Matt is the Deputy Superintendent Rockford Public Schools and a Rockford native who  graduated from West High School.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Illinois State University, Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University and currently pursuing his Doctorate from Northern Illinois University.  He is married with two daughters that attend Rockford Public Schools and participate in athletics for the district.

Aaron Johnson
Aaron serves as Creative Director at Thinker Ventures in downtown Rockford. He was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from Auburn High School. He earned a bachelors degree in Visual Communication from Northern Illinois University and worked with and for clients such as State Farm, LG and American Eagle. He lives in Rockford with his wife, Lydia, and two children, who attend Rockford Public Schools.

Alex Gary
Alex is the communications coordinator for Thinker Ventures in Rockford. He worked for newspapers in Beloit, Wis., and Rockford for 22 years before launching Alex Gary Communications Inc. in 2015. He has served Rockford Public Schools since 2009 running the scoreboard at Jefferson High School football and basketball games. In 2016, Alex launched the NIC-10 Sports History Book online, researching, posting and preserving the history of the NIC-10, and took over as editor of the Rockford Sports Coalition website.
